Newly recruited Nakuru county extension staff during an induction training

The Nakuru County Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services has conducted a two-day induction programme for 98 newly recruited extension officers as part of efforts to strengthen agricultural extension services across the county.

The officers underwent training on the structures and functions of the County Government and the department, financial management, human resource procedures, workplace mental wellness, as well as public service values, ethics, and management.

Speaking during the induction programme, Agriculture County Executive Committee Member Leonard Bor said the recruitment and training of the officers reflects the county government’s commitment to enhancing agricultural extension services and ensuring farmers receive timely technical support and advisory services.

He noted that extension officers are central to transforming the agricultural sector through the promotion of modern farming practices, climate-smart technologies, and increased productivity.

Chief Officer for Livestock, Fisheries and Veterinary Services Dr. Michael Cheruiyot emphasized the need to prepare the officers to provide quality and professional services to farmers while upholding integrity, accountability and ethical standards in public service. He said strengthening extension services is critical to improving agricultural productivity, enhancing food security and supporting farmer livelihoods across the county.

Chief Officer for Agriculture Eng. Margaret Kinyanjui urged the officers to embrace professionalism, teamwork and continuous learning in the course of their duties. She observed that the extension officers will play an important role in linking farmers to research, innovation and government programmes aimed at improving food security and household incomes.

The county says that the induction programme forms part of its broader efforts to strengthen agricultural extension services, which are key to promoting the adoption of modern farming technologies and climate-smart agriculture practices.
