Maize farmers in Nandi County have benefitted from a crop insurance programme by the County government. The 5647 farmers during the 2021 maize season received Kshs.12.2 Million thanks to the County Government of Nandi partnership with Apollo Agriculture, APA Insurance, and PULA.
The agricultural insurance compensation was made to farmers whose production was adversely affected by either extreme rain, drought, pests, or diseases among other perils that affected their yields.
The County says farmers drawn from across all the sub-counties are accessing seeds, fertilizers among other inputs on credit with an insurance plan from Apollo Agriculture and are expected to repay after harvesting.
Speaking during the payout in Songor-Soba ward in Tinderet, the Chief Officer for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Wilson Lelei said that the programme is transforming the Agriculture sector from subsistence farming to agribusiness enterprise.
‘In liaison with our partners, the County Government of Nandi has an agenda of transforming the agricultural sector. Climate change is threatening our productivity, but this partnership helps farmers mitigate and overcome risks,” said Lelei
