In an effort to promote agricultural diversification and improve farmers’ incomes, Nakuru County has successfully distributed thousands of avocado seedlings to farmers in Subukia and Waseges wards.

A total of 11,429 avocado seedlings were allocated to farmers in Subukia Ward, while an additional 4,286 seedlings were distributed in Waseges Ward. The exercise was overseen by Agriculture Chief Officer Newton Mwaura, alongside Subukia Ward MCA Isabella Makori, Waseges Ward MCA Elijah Murage, and Subukia Sub-County agricultural officers.

In addition to the seedling distribution, farmers received essential training on optimal planting techniques, pest and disease management, and best practices for successful avocado cultivation. This integrated approach highlights the county’s commitment to enhancing productivity and promoting sustainable agricultural methods.

A central objective of the initiative was to educate farmers on the benefits of crop diversification as a means to expand income opportunities and improve food and nutrition security in the region.

Beneficiary farmers expressed appreciation for the support, emphasizing the potential of avocado farming to significantly improve their livelihoods. The Hass variety, favoured for its shorter maturation period and prolonged fruiting season, was particularly well-received. Farmers expect higher yields and increased profitability, given that avocado cultivation demands relatively less labour and time compared to other crops.

“This initiative marks a significant step toward empowering our farmers and strengthening the local economy,” stated Agriculture Chief Officer Newton Mwaura. “By supplying high-quality seedlings and providing comprehensive training, we are equipping farmers with the necessary tools for success.”

The distribution underscores Nakuru County’s ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable agriculture and driving economic growth within the region.
