Makueni County kicks off campaign to promote aquaculture

Makueni County has kicked off a campaign to promote aquaculture by establishing a fish hatchery and fish feeds development units at the Agricultural Training Centre Kwakathoka. The agricultural training center will also act as a training facility for interested farmers and also produce feeds.

Governor Kivutha Kibwana said this when he hosted Livestock and Fisheries Cabinet Administrative Secretary Linah Kilimo at Wote, in Makueni County. The two discussed modalities of joint ventures between the national government and Makueni County on aquaponics and livestock development.

Governor Kibwana said his administration is interested in entire value chains development in the agriculture sector, with key focus on poultry, dairy, fruits and aquaculture.

The CAS toured several development projects among them the fish hatchery at Kwakathoka, Kathonzweni Milk Processing Plant and upcoming Kitise poultry slaughter house before commissioning an aquaponics system at Kwothithu Secondary school.
