Increasing awareness about rabies in Uganda

The Ministry of Agriculture Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) has concluded a series of joint activities with the Makerere University College of Veterinary Animal Resources and Bio-Security and the Uganda Society for Animal Care and Protection (USACP) aimed at increasing awareness about rabies and how to fight the disease.

The activities which were undertaken in Mubende District were part of a Rabies Prevention and Control Community Outreach.

The activities included mass sensitisation in Primary Schools and Secondary Schools, radio talk shows on Local Radio stations and vaccination of 230 dogs that were also treated against worm infection.

The vaccination exercise took place in the Mubende Municipal Council Mayor’s Gardens.

According to the Ministry, the activities will be scaled up to cover more Districts starting with the neighbouring Districts of Kassanda and Kyegegwa.
