The County Government of Nakuru has partnered with AgriVuma, a data management enterprise solution, to transform the delivery of agricultural extension services within the county. This collaboration is set to harness the potential of data analytics and advanced technology to significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of agricultural practices.
AgriVuma is a comprehensive farm management software designed to help farmers, agribusinesses, and other stakeholders in the agrifood value chain optimize their operations, improve productivity, and make data-driven decisions.
By integrating AgriVuma’s modern data management capabilities, the County Government of Nakuru aims to equip farmers with timely, precise, and actionable insights. These insights are designed to streamline farming operations, boost crop yields, foster sustainable agricultural practices and market linkages.
Brian Oyugi, CEO of Enigma Four Limited, highlighted that this partnership will grant farmers access to an extensive array of tools and resources, empowering them to make well-informed decisions. These resources encompass real-time data on weather patterns, soil health, market trends, and best practices in agriculture, ensuring that farmers are always ahead of the curve.
The pilot phase of this project has been successfully launched in 25 wards, where extension officers will be equipped with state-of-the-art data terminals. The initiative is poised for expansion to other regions once the viability and impact of the project are confirmed through rigorous data validation processes.
“Our primary objective is to ensure a seamless flow of real-time data,” Oyugi emphasized. “We are in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution, a time defined by the power of information and digital technology. Utilizing this technology to harness big data in agriculture is not just an advantage, but a necessity.”
The AI-powered platform offers several features, including soil testing, weather updates, and analysis of pest and disease infestations. By leveraging the farmer’s location and mapping data, the platform can provide tailored recommendations, ensuring that interventions are both timely and effective.
County Minister for Agriculture, Leonard Bor, underscored the initiative’s goal to enhance yields and quality through prompt data analysis and interventions. He noted that bridging the gap between technology and traditional farming is crucial for the sector’s progress.
“It is imperative for farmers to receive the necessary training to adapt to modern practices,” Bor stated. “What may have worked in the past might not be effective today, and staying updated is key to success.”
To support this vision, the County is currently training 300 extension officers to build capacity and ensure the effective implementation of the new technologies. Additionally, a dedicated Call Centre has been established, providing farmers with a direct line to seek guidance on best agricultural practices.
Subukia Member of County Assembly and member of the Agricultural Committee welcomed the partnership, stressing that decision-makers will now be able to support farmers based on accurate data, effectively addressing previous information gaps and ensuring a more resilient and productive agricultural sector.
