Uganda to focus on grasshopper rearing

The Uganda State Minister for Animal Industry, Hon. Lt. Col (Rtd) Bright Rwamirama has advised the Entomology Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries to ponder the idea of rearing grasshoppers saying it has proved that it can transform lives in Uganda.

Rwamirama says grasshoppers are now a lucrative business, and the business can be used as a foreign exchange earning option for the country.

“As a way forward for the Entomology Department, consider rearing grasshoppers because it is a delicacy and they are rich in proteins. I don’t want to only hear negativity; we should also look for positive areas. Grasshopper business is one of the areas I want to focus on during my time in this Ministry, and I have to take it up before I leave,” says the Minister.
In Uganda, grasshoppers are a delicacy as well as an important source of income to many people. It is also a delicacy in neighboring countries of Kenya and Tanzania. In certain countries like Mexico, grasshoppers are eaten as a good source of protein, minerals, and vitamins
