The Nateleng Poultry Farmers Cooperative Society in Nawoitorong Turkana County received a new Probox vehicle to facilitate the operations of the cooperative.
This is as part of Kshs. 5,499,580 grant by World Bank through the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Project(NARIGP). NARIGP is a National Government project funded by World Bank and is being implemented in 21 counties including Turkana. The project development objective is to increase agricultural productivity and profitability of the selected value chains by smallholder farmers.
Other equipments received by the society include two incubators with a capacity of holding 2112 eggs each,1000 improved kienyeji chicks, 30 bags of chick mash,80 bags of growers mash and 100 bags of kienyeji. County Chief Officer for Livestock and Veterinary Services Abdulahi Yusuf presided over the equipment handover ceremony at Nawoitorong area of Kanamkemer Ward.
According to the county government, increased chicken productivity and profitability, improved income at the household level and nutrition through the availability of eggs and chicken meat are part of the long term objectives for the grant.CCO Abdulahi called for proper utilization of the equipment donated and warned that wrangles over the running of the cooperative risked collapsing it, despite the heavy investment by the Government to the cooperative that has 194 registered members.
He outlined other initiatives that the County Government through its annual budget , and other livestock partners had rolled out for the benefit of livestock farmers in different parts of the County. NARIGP County coordinator Joseph Ekalale echoed CCO Abdulahi remarks, and asked members of Nateleng to have a teamwork spirit and ensure that the overall objective of the hatchery and transport funds is achieved.ICT equipment’s, office furniture, capacity building of staff and management committee have been factored in as part of the development grant.
