WFP supports agriculture in Isiolo

The World Food Programme (WFP) has donated Non-Food Items (NFIs) and 240 bags of Orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes vines to Isiolo County Department of agriculture predominantly for the implementation of the Sustainable Food System project activities in the County.

Isiolo County Governor Dr. Mohammed Abdi Kuti says the intervention is geared towards promoting agriculture for both food security and addressing of issues of malnutrition in the county. “I must appreciate World Food Programme for this donation that will really assist us not just in issues of food security but equally issues of malnutrition,” says Governor. Kuti. The Governor says that the orange fleshed sweet potato will be of great benefit in addressing the common Vitamin A deficiency problems in the County.

The Department of Agriculture will oversee distribution of the NFIs among them bee keeping equipment, farm tools like wheelbarrows, plastic watering cans, pangas, spades, and Agriculture engineering surveying equipment to target small scale farmers. Extension officers received three Yamaha motorbikes from WFP.

The County says considering that Vitamin A deficiency is among major nutrition and health problems facing Isiolo County, World Food Programme, is promoting local production of the Orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes (OFSP) by ensuring farmers in Burat,Ngaremara,and Kinna wards  will benefit from the vines.
