Tanzania Seeks Expanded Agricultural Support in Talks With World Bank

Tanzania and the World Bank have held discussions aimed at strengthening their agricultural partnership through the Tanzania Food System Resilience Program (TFSRP) and the newly designed World Bank AgriConnect Program.

The talks took place on January 16, 2026, in Berlin between the Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Daniel Chongolo (MP), and the World Bank’s Acting Global Director, Ms. Marianne Grosclaude, on the sidelines of the 18th Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) in Germany.

During the meeting, Hon. Chongolo expressed appreciation to Ms. Grosclaude for the financing and credit support of USD 300 million provided under the TFSRP to support a sustainable food system in Tanzania. He noted that the programme has advanced several initiatives, including soil health testing.

Tanzania also requested the World Bank to consider further support in agricultural mechanization, reduction of post-harvest losses through improved storage facilities, expansion of irrigation systems, and increased participation of the private sector across the agricultural value chain.

In response, Ms. Grosclaude said Tanzania has been an instrumental pilot country in implementing the Programme-for-Results approach in the agricultural sector under its flagship TFSRP. She agreed to support Tanzania’s new partnership proposal, noting that it aligns with the World Bank’s AgriConnect Program, which aims to transform smallholder farming into a commercially viable and inclusive driver of growth and food security.

Ms. Grosclaude also extended an invitation to the Ministry of Agriculture to participate in an upcoming knowledge impact programme scheduled to be held in Zambia in late February 2026.
