African Swine Fever alert in Murang’a

Pig farmers in Gaturi village of Kiharu Constituency have suffered a blow after an outbreak of African Swine Fever. Muranga County Executive Member for Agriculture (CEC) Albert Mwaniki has urged the farmers to kill their pigs. He has also told the the pig farmers to fumigate their pig sties with chlorine and wait for two months before restocking .

African Swine Fever is harmless to humans but it is highly contagious and deadly in pigs, causing diarrhoea, vomiting, coughing, hemorrhages on the skin and severe mental distress.There is no vaccine for African swine fever or drugs to treat it, and the usual practice is to kill the potentially affected pigs in a group altogether.
