A Total of 7,398 bags of coffee equivalent to 461 tonnes were traded at the auction fetching a gross value of $1,687,016 or Kshs 253 million
Eight Agents brought coffee for auction.
- New KPCU brought 31% of coffee traded, Alliance Berrie 13%, KCCE 9%, Kiambu Coffee Marketing Agency 15%, Kinya Coffee Marketing Agency Ltd 7%, Kipkelion Broker Company Ltd 11%, Mt Elgon Coffee Marketing Agency 10%, and United Eastern Kenya Coffee Marketing Co Ltd 5%
The highest percentage of coffee sold was grade C at 36% followed by AB 26% and AA at 10%
- The highest price fetched per bag was $332 per bag of grade AA and only 444 bags fetched $300 and above per bag. The highest price paid for grade C that had the highest volume was $183 which was also the average price per bag for the market
- Turning to buyers, the main buyers were Sasini buying 1282 bags or 17% of the entire volume traded followed by C.Dormans buying 14% , Taylor Winch 13%, Ibero 10%. Others included Jowam Coffee 9%, Rosie Van Dyke Company, Sodhi Trading Co Ltd at 8% among others.

Although this is sale number 3, there are indications that this season the volume of coffee will be significantly lower than last year’s crop.
One way of low volumes is high number of grades C and below which is the case this time round. However, it is still very early in the season so let’s wait and see. Normally sale 14 has traditionally been fetching the highest price so will it be the case this year?
