The new potato regulations will be implemented to the letter to ensure that farmers are not exploited according to Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri. Speaking in Eburru, Nakuru County, Kiunjuri said in about seven months they had achieved to do what had been pending in the Ministry for about eight years. He urged Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui who was present to make sure that vehicles passing through the county from other areas adhere to the rule. “This is a joint effort and I urge the County Commissioner to work together with the Governor to make sure the rules are followed. We are moving to an era where every agricultural produce will be sold in kilograms to ensure the farmer is not exploited,” said Kiunjuri. He said there are plans to introduce cold storage facilities in potato growing areas where farmers can store their potatoes after harvesting until the price is profitable. The CS also said he will work together with Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, to ensure that all vehicles ferrying potatoes into Wakulima Market (Marigiti) also comply with the law by ferrying potatoes packaged in the recommended bags and weight. The CS added that the Ministry is in the process of introducing more crops regulations to ensure farmers across the board benefit from Agriculture. He said in the next two months, regulations for 7 crops will be released and in another 4-5 months, regulations for 16 crops will also be released. “We want to ensure there will be no shortcuts in dealing with farm produce to ensure the farmer benefits,” said Kiunjuri
