The Ethiopian Ministry of Agriculture and the Agricultural Research Institute have partnered with Chinese agricultural machinery enterprises to promote the widespread use of modern agricultural technologies in Ethiopia.
In a forum that brought officials from the two countries together, Negusse Dechasa, Director General of the Agricultural Research Institute, said that using technology in agriculture is essential for increasing productivity and efficiency. He noted that cooperation with the Chinese government to modernize Ethiopia’s agricultural sector through technology transfer is remarkable.
The initiative goes beyond importing machinery; it also includes adopting tested, locally suitable methods and building local capacity. Policies are currently being developed to facilitate the broader use of mechanized farming, including the importation of previously exempted agricultural equipment.

Through the Chinese Aid initiative, the collaboration aims to strengthen bilateral ties and introduce technologies that improve efficiency in crops such as teff. Training and demonstrations have also been provided to encourage women’s participation in agriculture and support women working in various sectors.
Chinese manufacturers showcased tractors, combine harvesters, and other agricultural technologies during the initiative, highlighting the potential for mechanization to transform Ethiopia’s agricultural productivity.
