Tharaka Nithi bets on green grams for increased food security

Governor Muthomi Njuki issuing green grams seeds to a farmer

The County Government of Tharaka Nithi is distributing certified green gram seeds to farmers in the county this season with the aim of increasing food security in the county.

“Considering the recent prediction by the Metrological Department of poor rainfall, the drought-escaping high yielding N26 seed from KALRO will enable our farmers to reap more in the short rains of October/November/ December season,” says Muthomi Njuki the Tharaka Nithi Governor.

The County Boss has urged farmers in the lower Tharaka region to follow the farming guidelines as given by the agricultural extension officers to enable them to get a maximum harvest from the seed that he says has the ability to produce 6-8, 90Kg bags per acre.

The Governor says his government will continue employing adequate measures to cushion farmers from adverse effects of drought, which includes the provision of inputs varieties that are tolerant to minimum rainfall.
