Tanzania,Malawi Trade to Resume Under New Bilateral Agreement

An agreement was reached to resume trade after diplomatic negotiations between Tanzania and Malawi

Diplomatic negotiations between Tanzania and Malawi successfully culminated in an agreement to resume trade starting May 2, 2025.

The high-level talks were led by Hon. Ambassador Mahmoud Thabit Kombo (MP), Tanzania’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, and Hon. Nancy Gladys Tembo (MP), Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, on May 2, 2025, in Dodoma.

The discussions also involved Tanzania’s Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Hussein Bashe (MP), and Hon. Dr. Selemani Jafo (MP), Minister for Industry and Trade. Technical teams were headed by Permanent Secretaries from Tanzania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Representing Tanzania, the Permanent Secretaries included Ambassador Dr. Samwel Shelukindo (Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation), Mr. Gerald Mweli (Ministry of Agriculture), and Dr. Hashil T. Abdallah (Ministry of Industry and Trade).

A Joint Communiqué was signed on May 2, 2025, following the ministerial meeting involving the Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, and Industry and Trade ministries from both countries, held in Dodoma.

The signing of the Joint Communiqué marks a reaffirmation of strengthened commercial ties between Tanzania and Malawi, particularly in the trade of agricultural products, in accordance with existing regional and international agreements and protocols.
