The Tanzania Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Hussein Bashe (MP), has cautioned against the widespread practice of disposing of certain avocado produce without exploring alternative applications. He stressed that such an approach undermines the potential to transform these avocados into other valuable products.
“Avocado serves as a backbone of the horticulture sector, functioning as a critical sub-sector due to the diverse array of crops within horticulture,” stated Minister Bashe, explaining the rationale behind convening the First National Avocado Stakeholders Meeting.
The meeting, held last week in Dodoma, was organized by the Cereals and Other Produce Regulatory Authority (COPRA) in collaboration with the Tanzania Horticultural Association (TAHA).

In his keynote address, Minister Bashe reaffirmed the Sixth Phase Government’s commitment to prioritizing the avocado sector alongside other high-potential crops. He noted that this focus has led to the implementation of several strategic initiatives aimed at advancing the industry. Among these initiatives is the establishment of the Tanzania Plant Health and Pesticides Authority (TPHPA), which ensures plant health and quality control.
“We have introduced an irrigation subsidy program in the avocado sector by procuring 18 drilling machines for irrigation wells. This initiative will bolster avocado farmers across the nation and enhance the longevity of avocado trees,” the Minister announced.
Regarding the radiation fee imposed on avocado exports, Minister Bashe indicated that the government is reviewing the policy, with potential removal under consideration.
Tanzania currently ranks as the second-largest avocado producer in Africa, alongside key competitors such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and South Africa. In terms of export markets, the country ships approximately 40% of its avocados to Europe, 30% to India, and 19% to the Middle East.
The meeting brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including farmers, exporters, development partners, Members of Parliament, private sector representatives, and other key players in the avocado industry.
