Welcome to this week’s edition of The HK Coffee Market Summary: Sale 16 Provisional Reports

The coffee sale16 for the 2024/2025 season took place on Tuesday, January 28th, 2025, at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange located on the 2nd floor of Wakulima House along Haile Selassie Avenue, and via online platforms.

A total of 28,971 bags (50kgs) of coffee were traded, representing a 4% increase from the 27,864 bags traded in Sale 15 last week.

The average price slightly dropped to $340 from the previous $348 per 50kg bag. This average price equals $6.8 per kg of clean coffee, or Kshs 134 per kilo of cherry gross (Kshs 107 per kilo to the farmer).

The highest price achieved was $444 per 50kg bag, a 4% increase from $427 per 50kg in Sale 15. This maximum price was achieved by the GACHATHA wet mill (Factory Code: XAC29F01), part of the Gachatha Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Nyeri County. Notably, the highest price last week was also achieved by a cooperative from Nyeri County.

Volumes Traded: 28,971 bags (1,773,567 kgs) were sold at an average price of $340 per 50kg bag.

Average Price: This translates to Kshs 134 per kilo of cherry on the trading floor, with approximately Kshs 107 (80%) going to the farmer.

Total Value: The total value of coffee traded was $12,046,657.56 (approximately Kshs 1.6 billion).

Highest Price: Grade AA coffee from Gachatha Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Nyeri County achieved $444 per bag for one lot of 33 bags (2,031 kgs). This factory’s highest price last season was $453 per bag, consistent with their history of securing premium prices. Their performance in upcoming sales will be monitored.

Confirmed Sales: By the close of business, 4,791 bags (17% of traded volume) were confirmed.

Premium Pricing: 113 bags (0.04% of traded volume) sold for $400 or more.

Premium Grades: Grades AA and AB accounted for 22,608 bags (78% of total volume traded).

Brokers: The top five brokers were Alliance Berries, Kirinyaga Slopes, New KPCU, KCCE-MA, and Kipkelion. Others included Minnesota Marketers, CEBBA, Bungoma Union, United Eastern Coffee Marketing Company, Kinya Coffee, Kiambu Coffee and Muranga County Coffee Dealer (MCCD),

Buyers: All coffee was purchased by one primary buyer, with C. Dormans leading the market.

The Nairobi Coffee Exchange will issue the Final Transaction Listing with detailed information on trading factories by the week’s end.
