Ethiopia Highlights Agricultural Reforms at BRICS Ministerial Meeting in Brazil

Ethiopia participated in the BRICS Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture held in Brasília, with the country highlighting its transformative agricultural policies and commitment to regional collaboration.

Representing Ethiopia at the high-level segment was Ambassador Leulseged Tadese, who addressed fellow delegates on the nation’s comprehensive approach to agricultural development under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

Ambassador Leulseged detailed a range of initiatives spearheaded by the Ethiopian government, including the National Wheat Harvest campaign, the Green Legacy Initiative, the Yelemat Tirufat nutrition program, as well as efforts in cluster farming, land restoration, and irrigation development.]

“These efforts reflect Ethiopia’s political will and strategic coordination in transforming its agriculture sector,” the ambassador said, noting the progress as a model for sustainable agricultural advancement across Africa.

He emphasized that Ethiopia is intensifying its agricultural programs to ensure national food security and food sovereignty. In that regard, the ambassador expressed Ethiopia’s readiness to deepen cooperation with BRICS member states and partners, particularly in areas such as technology transfer, knowledge sharing, and experience exchange.

Highlighting the country’s untapped agricultural potential, Ambassador Leulseged extended an invitation to the BRICS business community to explore investment opportunities in Ethiopia’s growing agriculture sector.

The ministerial meeting was preceded by a Senior Agricultural Officials’ Meeting, held in Brasília from April 14 to 16, 2025.
