Kisii County demonstrates significantly stronger coffee production capacity compared to its neighbour, Nyamira, with nearly three times the number of registered cooperatives and substantially higher production volumes.
With 61 registered cooperatives compared to Nyamira’s 21, Kisii has established a more extensive organisational infrastructure for coffee farming. This structural advantage translates into impressive production figures, as Kisii produced 982,930 kg of coffee in the 2023/2024 season compared to Nyamira’s 656,900 kilograms.

The value generated from these sales further highlights the disparity, with Kisii earning 488.68 million Kenyan shillings against Nyamira’s 327.24 million shillings during the same period.
In the ongoing 2024/2025 season, Kisii has so far sold 155,401 kg, earning Ksh 123 million, while Nyamira has sold 93,135 kg, earning Ksh 73 million. Both counties remain active in the trade, and volumes are expected to increase by the end of the season on September 30th, 2025.
Up to this point, Kisii maintains its production leadership, generating approximately 67% more volume and 70% more value than Nyamira in the current season, suggesting that Kisii’s larger cooperative network and established production systems provide a competitive advantage.
