The County Government of Uasin Gishu and the Eldoret City Marathon on Friday led other stakeholders in a tree planting exercise at the Kapseret Forest, in Simat/Kapseret Ward, Kapseret Sub-County.
Speaking while leading the exercise, Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago insisted on the need to plant more trees to mitigate the effects of climate change.
“Conserving the environment is key and that’s why the County Government of Uasin Gishu has worked alongside Eldoret City marathon to conserve the environment through afforestation in this forest and others within the county.” said the County Boss.
“By now if we do the fresh evaluation, the forest cover in Uasin Gishu is at 10 % and we are targeting 15 % by the end of 2022,” said Governor Mandago.
The event themed ‘Climate Action’ saw more than 10,000 trees planted to mark this year’s edition of the annual City Marathon that was interrupted by Covid-19 early this year.
The Deputy Governor H.E Hon Daniel Chemno challenged all farmers to embrace diversification and plant more fruit trees on their farms. Water and Environment CECM, Ms Mary Njogu thanked all the partners for their support to the County Government on environmental conservation.
