The County Government of Uasin Gishu on Tuesday held an awareness forum on monitoring Drosophilla Suzuki, a pest that is attacking several fruits of agricultural importance such as strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, grapes , blackberries and cherries.
The County says that this is set to enhance horticultural production in the estates. Speaking during the meeting, County Director for Agriculture Reuben Seroney noted that peri-urban agriculture is the way to go since most of the farms have been reduced to small scale and residents were advised to opt for strawberry production to uplift their standards.
The team was also trained on the horticultural industry, strawberry production and challenges, major quarantine pests and impact on trade in horticultural products and setting up of surveillance/monitoring programme for the Drosophilla Suzukii pest.
