Potato is the emerging food crop in Uasin Gishu County and the County Government is working with the private sector to encourage both smallholder and large-scale farmers to venture into its production. This is according to the Agriculture CEC Samuel Yego who said that they are going to help farmers market their produce.
He was speaking in Tarakwa ward, Kesses sub-county on Wednesday when he joined Pambazuka Women Group as they harvested potatoes. The County Government funded the group through the Kenya Climate Smart Agriculture Project (KCSAP) to the tune of Kshs. 475,000.
The group harvested over 360 bags of 50kgs each and sold 150 bags netting Kshs. 400,000. The rest were divided among the members to be used as seeds and the remaining were distributed to the needy in the Community.
KCSAP is set to provide an excellent opportunity to transform climate-smart agriculture to mitigate climate change.
