Kakamega County has partnered with the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to implement the six-year Tunza Green Climate Fund Project, focusing on value chains in poultry, African leafy vegetables, coffee, and fruit trees.
The County Department of Agriculture, led by CECM Mophat Mandela, convened a sensitization workshop for agricultural officers from Likuyani, Lugari, and Malava sub-counties to pave the way for the project’s implementation.

Mandela commended the FAO for supporting Governor Fernandes Barasa’s food security agenda, stating that the initiative will boost productivity, enhance farmers’ resilience to climate change, and promote sustainable practices. He underscored that the commitment of field officers will be key to its success.
Starting next week, agricultural officers are expected to mobilize farmer groups across 20 wards in 12 sub-counties to apply for Farmer Field Schools (FFS). The Tunza Project will focus on strengthening farmer organizations, with a special emphasis on empowering women and youth through climate-smart technologies and market-oriented farming models.
