Elgeyo Marakwet County boosting coffee farming

The County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet, is constructing a coffee pulping factory in Kocholwa, Soy South Ward. The site has already been identified and according to the department of agriculture, the machine to be installed at the factory will have a capacity of pulping 1,100 kgs of coffee cherry per hour.

The department says this is one of the biggest investments under it with the aim of adding value along the coffee value chain in the county. Soy South has been in the county’s map on the quantity of coffee sold per season. Last season the farmers sold 46,221 kgs of coffee to various coffee milling companies.

This season, farmers have planted 31,715 coffee seedlings. The department projects that farmers in this area will plant 100,000 coffee seedlings by April 2021 saying Elgeyo Marakwet is among regions in Kenya producing best quality coffee in the market.
