The County Government of Nakuru has suspended fishing in Lake Solai for a month to address the rising cases of overfishing that threaten the lake’s aquatic ecosystem. This suspension aims to develop a sustainable management plan for the water body and allow the ecosystem to recover following extensive fishing activities.
The announcement came after the CEC Water and Environment, Dr. Nelson Maara, met with locals in Solai Ward, Rongai Sub-County.
Dr. Maara stated that during the suspension, a management committee will be established, comprising community members and local officials under the county government’s guidance. This committee will develop new sustainable regulations to ensure responsible fishing practices, balancing community needs with the preservation of the lake’s ecosystem.
The Chief Officer for Veterinary Services, Dr. Michael Cheruiyot, announced that a comprehensive fish count would be conducted to assess the lake’s current state.
