Samburu County Government is promoting camel production in the lowlands of Samburu North and Samburu East Sub Counties.
According to the county government, camels are resilient to drought hence provide milk throughout the year. Camels also stay at home all year around hence they are less exposed to the risks of cattle raids which mostly happen during dry spells when warring communities compete for water and pasture. They also fetch good money in the market.
The camels distribution programme to families in the arid Samburu East and North sub counties is part of the county government’s efforts aimed at promoting sustainable livestock farming practices, food security and cushioning the livestock farmers against the effects of climate change.
The county government recently concluded camel distribution in Samburu East Sub County while Samburu North Sub County Somali breed camels will be delivered soon by the supplier.
