The County Government of Uasin Gishu is partnering with Fair and Sustainable Insect Farms on the collection and transformation of market waste. The waste will be transformed to produce quality animal feeds and fertilizer.
At least 6 markets within the city have been earmarked to benefit from the program, which will run for five years once the deal is signed.
In a meeting with the company representatives, the County Director of Trade Isaac Lagat said the program is of great essence in the markets noting that the collected waste will reduce carbon emissions because disposal will be done in an orderly manner. Lagat also said the department will identify spaces in the selected markets where the cubes or collection sites will be established.
According to the Company’s Director Wilfried Schasfoort, their main objective is to collect waste from markets and process it into quality manure for farmers. “We have cubes where these wastes can be stored as opposed to normal dumping for ease of transportation and sorting,” he said
