Kisii County is set to construct a modern banana market at Nyamache. The market will be built under the National Agricultural and Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP) which is funded by the World Bank. The County has advertised for bids towards the market construction and improvement of market access roads.
Meanwhile, the banana processing factory that the county was building is complete. The Kshs 170 million worth factory was built with funding from the European Union where the County contributed Kshs 60 million. It is located inside Kisii Agricultural Training Centre grounds. When operational, the factory is expected to process bananas into various products like crisps, wine, and banana powder.
The County government however has failed to complete an avocado factory it started building in 2014. Avocado farmers had expanded their farms in anticipation of a ready market but this has not materialized.
