Tanzania Tanga Regional Commissioner Batilda Buriani has called on District Commissioners, Regional and District Administrative Secretaries, and Council Executive Directors from Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Manyara and Tanga regions to identify and verify suitable areas for productive agriculture, livestock keeping and fisheries within the Northern Corridor.
Buriani made the call while opening the Northern Zone Agricultural Growth Corridors (AGCOT) Sensitisation and Development Workshop, organised by the Agricultural Transformation Office (ATO) in Arusha. She emphasised that agricultural corridors are a key tool in implementing the Agricultural Transformation Master Plan.
She said the workshop aimed to build a shared understanding among regional and local government technical experts on the concept of agricultural corridors, their role in promoting commercial production, and the responsibilities of stakeholders in their implementation.
Buriani also underscored the importance of advancing modern, high-productivity agriculture that takes climate change into account. She noted that the agriculture sector has been identified as a transformative sector in the National Development Vision 2050 due to its significant contribution to employment, gross domestic product and foreign exchange earnings.
Meanwhile, Agricultural Transformation Office (ATO) Director Elizabeth Missokia said agricultural corridors are strategic zones that integrate production, processing, value addition, storage, transportation and markets. She explained that their objective is to accelerate the transformation of productive agriculture and support the country’s transition to an upper-middle-income economy by 2050, in line with the National Development Vision.
