Kirinyaga vs Nyeri: How Coffee Production Evolved Over a Decade

The coffee production trends in Nyeri and Kirinyaga counties over the 10 years from 2013/14 to 2022/23 show a remarkable shift in performance and trajectory.

Nyeri, which initially had the highest production at over 5 million kilograms in 2013/14, experienced a steady decline in output until 2016/17 when it fell below 2.5 million kilograms. After this low point, Nyeri’s production plateaued with modest recovery by 2022/23, reaching just under 4 million kilograms, still significantly lower than its initial levels.

In contrast, Kirinyaga has demonstrated consistent and exponential growth in coffee production throughout the period. Starting from a low base of under 500,000 kilograms in 2013/14, Kirinyaga’s output steadily rose each year, overtaking Nyeri around 2016/17. From that point, Kirinyaga maintained a strong upward trajectory, reaching nearly 10 million kilograms by 2022/23.

Although Nyeri has shown progress in the last two seasons, Kirinyaga continues to shine in both volume and payments to farmers. So, kudos to Kirinyaga for doing their part and to Nyeri, do your best at least to get back to 2013/2014 production levels.
